EMSB Celebrates Highest Success Rate Among Public Boards in Quebec

Montreal - Tuesday, September 29, 2020

The English Montreal School Board has surpassed its record, set last year, for the highest Success Rate in graduation and qualification among public school boards in the entire province of Quebec, based on a seven year cohort at 92.5 percent.

These figures were released by the Ministère de l’Education et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES). While the majority of students graduated after five years, the Ministry allows each cohort to be followed for an additional two years to ensure that students have every opportunity to graduate or obtain a first qualification.

In addition to having the highest Success Rate in the province, the EMSB is also number one in the public network and among English boards.

The province-wide Success Rate, which includes both public and private school results, remained stable for 2019 at 81.8 percent.

EMSB Trustee Marlene Jennings said she was delighted to see the EMSB maintain such a high success rate.   “We celebrate this achievement with all those who contribute to the excellent education provided by the EMSB, from our teachers, to staff, parents, and volunteers and of course our students,” she said.

Added EMSB Interim Director General Evelyne Alfonsi: “This achievement is a testament to the strength and diversity of our programs, providing opportunities for all students to experience success. It also reveals the high quality of instruction that is delivered in the classroom.”

The goals and objectives that the EMSB has set for its students can be found in the Commitment-to-Success Plan, available here.

“According to this strategic plan, our target to achieve a success rate of 91 percent by 2022 has again been surpassed,” said EMSB Director of Educational Services Anna Sanalitro. “Indeed, things are getting better!”

Education Consultant Tracy Mangal   notes that the EMSB’s goal  is to ensure that all students achieve their full potential.  “Our diverse programs ensure enrichment for those who need it and remediation for others,” she says. “A 92.5 percent Success Rate is a testimony to how our board, through a variety of initiatives and support strategies outlined in our Commitment to Success Plan, is achieving this goal.  No matter what, we never lose sight of our primary purpose: student success!  And the proof is in our results.”

These results are based on a Grade 7 cohort that entered the EMSB in 2012 and was followed for seven years. The numbers were compiled based on how many of these students obtained their final school leaving certification.
